Most of us spend hours every day working at a computer, scrolling on a phone, or leaning toward a screen. Even with ideal ergonomics, this creates what’s commonly known as tech neck—a functional postural distortion that affects the muscles and alignment of the neck and upper spine.

What’s Actually Happening in Tech Neck
In my clinical work, I consistently see increased activation in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and scalene muscles, especially the anterior and posterior scalenes. These front-of-the-neck muscles fire constantly when the head shifts forward—like when we reach toward a laptop screen.
Meanwhile, the back of the neck is doing the opposite job. Those muscles are being stretched while simultaneously working hard to keep the head from tipping all the way forward. This creates chronic tension at the base of the neck, across the tops of the shoulders, and up into the suboccipitals.
Add in the typical collapsed chest and compressed abdomen of desk posture, and you have a full-body pattern that slowly trains the neck into dysfunction.
How Sleep Makes the Pattern Worse—or Better
When you lie down at night, your body doesn’t magically reset. Your neck will continue the same compensatory pattern it uses during the day to keep your eyes oriented toward the horizon.
A study published on PubMed found that cervical-supportive pillows significantly reduced the activity of the SCM during sleep, while standard pillows showed higher muscle activation—meaning the neck was still “working” all night long.

Lower muscle activity at night means deeper recovery, less accumulated tension, fewer headaches, and better alignment long term.
